I make this page as much for the fans, as the band. It works because you guys make it so. So thank you kindly. I hope you like the final piece.
Super Fan To Marketing Mastermind
Starting out in August 2012, two weeks before the band’s musical debut The Kodaline EP, Lorna first set up a website titled ‘Kodaline – For the fans’. Admitting that she didn’t really have “a clue how to do this”, the project began as a personal indulgence and endeavour. Discovering Kodaline so early on, she recalls that “there wasn’t much out there in the internet world about the band”. Wanting the share her love of the band with the potential of spreading the word to a few more people she began to expand her pages – “As I created the pages, I did it for the guys and to help promote them, but I honestly never thought anyone would pay attention to my sites”.
Little did Lorna know, that five years later her pages would be thriving, with over 7,000 Facebook likes, 2,000 followers on both Twitter and Instagram and nearly 1,500 subscribers to her YouTube channel.
What started as a very personal project has expanded far further than she expected. She has surprised herself with how much she has achieved through running the pages, stating that she has “enjoyed seeing it grow and seeing what other ideas I can come up with”. But with so many adoring Kodaline fans dependent on her updates, it’s a wonder that she has been able to continue with the growth of the pages. It’s this that sets her aside from so many others. Lorna hasn’t been caught up in the industry, she isn’t employed to do marketing for a band she has little interest in, and this whole venture is down to her passion for the band. “It doesn’t feel like work at all… I do the pages because I love them”
Becoming a bridge between the band and their fans is what the Kodaline Fan Base social media pages do best. Each social media platform allows for a different aspect of the band’s world to be brought to the fans, sharing live photos through Instagram, videos of performances through YouTube and information/links on Twitter, however it’s the Facebook page that has been the most successful. Lorna is able to create events, share news, photos and fan art in a clear and organised way. The latest part of the project involves setting up private Facebook groups for fans in each country, allowing them to “join and speak to one another from their own country”. It’s not just the fans who have shown an appreciation for the work that goes into keeping the pages up to date. Kodaline as a band play a big role too, “the guys are a big help behind the Kodaline Fan Base…it has grown because they are supportive”. The band often share or retweet posts made to the Kodaline Fan Base pages, and some fans have even pointed out to Lorna that the band have been known to take inspiration from her content, posting their promotional information in a similar way.
It will come as no surprise, that with how much work Lorna puts into the fan base pages, on top of her day to day life, she deserves time to relax, and does so by attending concerts. Of course, most of which are Kodaline’s.
